written on the backs of bonds from the 50's

  • Dec. 4th, 2009 at 12:07 AM

that's my letter, composed on the back of 1950's bonds, written to one of my penpalparty penpals this week. hope it gets there soon, before this photo becomes a spoiler of things to come!

on the subject of penpals, my friend gabby sent me a story written about these people - i heard about them earlier this year but it something else entirely to see their lovely handiwork.

penpal party round 2 is beginning. why is it that i always pick the most busy and insane times in my life to start a timesuck project? in any event, it has been worth the time and work -- penpal party round 1 has been a success so far with lots of people reporting back with happy stories. (see photos + stuff here: http://www.boygirlparty.com/penpalparty )

that reminds me to share my own little anecdote. this isn't the first time i've organized a project like this.
back in 2001, i started a project called 'penpal nation'
i stamped and self-addressed about 200 blank vintage postcards and left them around the country, handed them out at [music] shows i played, gave them to strangers. about 50 postcards made it back to me. it was interesting.

i like mail.

been working like a maniac on some exciting new projects. from painting + designing to the penpal party (see my previous post), holiday orders, social media, upcoming shows and deadlines, etc. i feel like i am about to short circuit, but i love this time of year for exactly this reason. i love the momentum!

in other news, i started a facebook page for boygirlparty today. won't you please visit?

(and feel free to spread the word, i'm not sure how these things function otherwise)

winter must be cold

it's 84 degrees today here in San Diego, but still somehow feels like fall. Or indian summer. maybe it's the daylight savings thing -- i always dread the fall one, because the sun in my eyes at 6am makes it so i can't sleep, and the darkness at 5pm makes it so i can't work! probably the only perk of living in indiana, in my opinion, is that they don't bother with daylight savings at all over there. it was always such a source of confusion when driving from chicago to michigan (not unlike the time traveller's wife! we spent tons of time in south haven as kids) when in indiana we never knew what time it was supposed to be.

I feel right now like I have so much on my plate -- too much -- but I know I've handled this kind of work load in the past and I know I can do it again. I've been trying to use my time off to do good things for myself: whether it's taking in a good museum exhibit, going for a walk, or cooking a really awesome meal from scratch. i think that's how i weathered the storms in the past: balancing life with work, and i need to learn to do that again!

which reminds me: i welcome any fall recipes! If you have a good one, I'd love to get it. I've been making lots of curry + snickerdoodles these days.

Also, I've been blogging more over on my site -- really mostly about the shop and what's new with me and art. today I posted some paintings over there. But comments are enabled, so please visit me over there sometime.

ok. over and out.

trying to get back into the swing of things between life, work and the shop.. not much to say, i've just been working night&day like a maniac trying to catch up.

twitter says it's national oatmeal day. does such a day really exist?
or is it like 'opposite day'?

peter's nest, originally uploaded by boygirlparty.

it always feels weird to get back to work after a major event in my life (buying a house, having an art show...) part of me wants to reply to the 200+ people i get emails from every day "just wait a minute! this girl is positively exhausted! something big happened in her life and she needs to read a book or two and catch up on some sleep and go grocery shopping before she can handle anything next!" but alas, it's time to just move on, cause after the big event (art show, wedding, house/moving) is over, you really no longer have an excuse to take a break.

on a totally opposite note: thank you so much for everyone's warm congrats and kind words on my most recent post abt the wedding! i will share some more photos soon from the big day soon (although our hired photos won't be ready for another two months?)

but for now, maybe just look at the photo above of little peter p. finch and his nest, and marvel that a creature that small can build something so sturdy and soft and comforting.

really and truly

man, what a wacky last couple weeks it's been! friends in town, friends out of town, family in town, family gone, late nights every night, early mornings every morning, and endless list of errands, and a LOT of fun. bonfire, brunch, rehearsal, wedding 1, dinner, dinner, dinner, wedding 2, hospital, sleep. a lot of highs and a couple weird lows. we need a vacation from all this, i think that's why people honeymoon, isn't it? suddenly feeling very silly for planning ours for 2010.

check out this photo by our super-talented friends dustin & elvee, the same amazing people (and our neighbors!) who made our cake (see previous blog post):
Facebook | Elvee Borgonia Froehlich's Photos - portraits

our super no-two-people-should-be-this-talented friends took us for a beachy photoshoot the day of wedding 2, and how much fun we had! can you tell? (though after seeing how amazing their photos were, i am regretting not having professionally done my hair and makeup for them!)

anyway, we're giving ourselves this weekend to pay bills, read mail and get back to speed, move all the boxes out of our living room and catch up on sleep...
then moving on, though it feels so weird to do so.

the shop at boygirlparty.com: bear to-do list notepadsomething is screwy. First, i set fire to the microwave two days ago with a bag of microwave popcorn -- i swear, even though i stayed up all night boiling lemons and coffee and washing down every surface in the house, it is STILL all i can smell. also, let me tell you -- the fact that it was 100 calorie kettle corn does NOT make it smell sweetly. it smells like cotton candy from hell. as a result, even the thought of food makes me nauseous, so running on no sleep and no food, somehow i managed to do the following:

a. i re-coded over 250 pages on my shop. i added a banner, changed some of the buttons, reformatted the tables, and most importantly, added this little "or you might like" button that you see on the left there, which allows for easier browsing of the shop. it was all so tedious which is why i wonder: where the heck did the stamina and concentration come from?!!!! didn't you read what i said before about popcorn hell?!

b. i started training again this week. i've been doing physical training for the last 7 months or so, a couple times a week at the YMCA - but had to take a hiatus when i had the broken shoulder. somehow, in my weird empty lifeless state, i trained vigorously day before yesterday and i'm going to do it again today - somehow. um.

c. i'm driving again - yes, for 7 weeks there i was not mobile at speeds greater than 4 mph (maybe 5 if i hustle) so yesterday i had to run an errand. on the way home - what should have taken me 15 minutes to drive took me 90 minutes. why? because i spaced, deep in "thought", and missed my exit by, like, a lot. in rush hour! maybe i better stick to the no car thing....

i'm just wondering when i'm going to crash - i feel like i haven't slept in days. last night around midnight, before i did get ~3 hrs of sleep, michael and i were watching the padres vs cubs game (it's like the battle of cities-i-lived-in) and i started talking about how funny something or another was. after 2 minutes of incoherent babbling i realized i had no idea what i was saying. not like: "oh, i was saying something but i lost my train of thought" -- more like "oh, what i am saying makes no sense whatsoever in any language"

if only i could sleep. but then i wouldn't have gotten all this work done....

happy t-day. ps, go veg.

sooo i have a t-mobile sidekick with my artwork! Pretty rad. Check how they spelled my name:

Look closely...
ok, if you've been on my flickr or twitter, then you already know the hilarity of it all.

but onto some updates on my shop and stuff:
i've introduced a couple new shipping methods to my shop this holiday
season: the options for Express Mail (overnight) and Priority Mail (2-3 day) shipping in the US, and First class air mail *insured* for orders headed abroad.

Please check the delivery chart below so your order has its best chance of arriving in time for gift-giving...

PS Come shop locally with me here in San Diego at Holiday Hit List on Sunday, December 7th! but are any of you local? i don't know.

oh, hey! happy t-day, by the way.
GO VEG!

menders

  • Nov. 6th, 2008 at 3:25 PM
speaking of things in my life that need/needed mending:

only a few miniature paintings came back to me after my solo show in August -- and looking at them, they just didn't seem to work anymore outside the context of the art show. so i decided to mend them. this is the 'before' shot of all 6.

menders: before

and here's the afters:

menders: after #1
menders: after #2 + #3
more )

PS Felt Club's next sunday [11/16!]! see you there, i hope -- i can't believe the holidays are upon us. doesn't feel that way.
PPS GOBAMA!

don't stand so close to me

  • Oct. 13th, 2008 at 7:05 AM
last night i had a weird dream about a craft show, it mostly involved getting to the venue moments before the show began, but sitting on my table with some friends (including camilla who i've never met in person!) and talking about life, until one of the craft show organizers got so annoyed with us that they just came around and picked up the table, with four or five people sitting on it (including me!) and moved us to the humiliating center of the room.

then jenny gave me an award for "the biggest eyesore of a booth ever" and asked me never to come back.
then, just like the last craft show i did, my display broke and all my stuff went flying.

then, some french people and i had to give a gift to a fellow crafter for their birthday, and they insisted it be a wilted piece of lettuce, which i didn't think made a proper present but was for some reason unable to express myself.

felt club is nov 16th -- i pray it doesn't go down like this.
